The Freiburg Christmas market on the Rathausplatz in the heart of the Old Town (usually the four weeks before Christmas although you should check before planning anything centred around the Christmas Market - Weihnachtsmarkt) is considered one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.
The market this year takes place in Rathausplatz, Franziskanergasse and Unterlindenplatz.
It is not only an unmistakable tradition for residents of Freiburg: thousands of visitors come every year from far away to capture its unique charm.
The appeal of the market lies both in the impressive backdrop of the square with its historic buildings as well as in the assortment of things for sale.
Framed by the Gothic cloister of the one-time Franciscan monastery, the nave of St. Martin’s Church and the picturesque, newly renovated facades of the new and old town halls, an enchanting collection of little houses is erected four weeks before Christmas.
The Freiburg Christmas market is very much part of a tradition of Black Forest Christmas markets.
This year, visitors will also see woodcarvers, gem cutters, glass blowers, potters, candlestick makers and straw artists in the narrow market streets. All this will be coupled with the inimitable aroma of gingerbread, mulled wine, spices, roasted almonds, hot chestnuts, potato noodles, Black Forest ham and bacon sauerkraut.
