Vogelpark Steinen - Steinen Birdpark

Not too close to Freiburg (roughly 80km away) but worth the trip for you and your children. The park has over 1,000 birds from more than 300 different species.

Confusingly, in my mind anyway, they also house kangaroos and monkeys. Situated in a large green covered valley, the bird park has a large display of eggs and many days of the year, it is possible to view the eggs hatching, definitely fascinating for any young kids.

Other points of interest include the falconry which includes birds flying free. A daily show consisting of owls, falcons and eagles takes place at 11am and is repeated again at 3pm.  Easily accessible, the falconry is located near the park entrance on a small elevated area and has approx. 600 seats. The view from this point is spectacular, it reaches beyond the bird park and far into the attractive landscape.

Kids are offered the chance to stroke tamed owls. Every day at 12pm and 4pm the birds are fed and children are also encouraged to take part with the feeding. The kangaroos can also be stroked by children, although not young toddlers.

There's not too many activities for toddlers although kids from aged 3 upwards will talk about the visit to the bird park for a long time afterwards.

Large gardens, a cable car across the complete region, a great playground / play area, places to barbeque and picnic areas add to the list of ammeneties. Ponds and small lakes also lie next to the various areas. Very scenic.

Freshen up your feet in our paddling pool and bare-foot path. Experience natural materials with your feet. The large restaurant area not only contains the paddling pool but also features an adjoining bare-foot path, which has been equipped with various natural materials. There is also a connecting bridge and a carp pond. There are special areas provided for storing shoes and there are plenty of places where you can sit in the shade. The restaurant area is a great experience for both young and old. A wooden shelter provides seating for about 20 people.

Adults pay 15 Euro to get in and kids between 4 and 12 pay 7.50 Euro. Toddlers, kids under 4 and the registered blind get in for free. OAPs get a discounted entrance rate of 13 Euro and it costs only 10 Euro for registered disabled visitors. Other discounts for larger groups can be found on their website.

Parking is free and dogs are only permitted if they are kept on a leash at all times.
